先日ノーベル経済学賞を受賞した
ポール・クルーグマン (Paul Krugman) 教授は
"White Collars Turn Blue"
[「ホワイトカラー真っ青」 （山形浩生訳）]
において、「高等教育の価値低下」 をめぐり、
以下のように言及している。
In the 1990s everyone believed
that education was the key to economic success,
for both individuals and nations.
A college degree, maybe even a postgraduate degree,
was essential for anyone who wanted a good job
as one of those "symbolic analysts".
But computers are very good at analyzing symbols;
it's the messiness of the real world
they have trouble with.
Furthermore, symbols can be quite easily transmitted
to Asmara or La Paz
and analyzed there for a fraction
of the cost of doing it in Boston.
So over the course of this century
many of the jobs that used to require a college degree
have been eliminated,
while many of the rest can,
it turns out, be done quite well
by an intelligent person
whether or not she has studied world literature.
This trend should have been obvious even in 1996.
After all, even then America's richest man was
Bill Gates, a college dropout
who didn't seem to need a lot of formal education
to build the world's most powerful
information technology company.
（1990 年代にはほとんどだれもが、
個人にとっても国家にとっても
教育こそ経済的成功の鍵だと信じていた。
例の 「シンボル分析家」 という
高給職業につきたければ、
大卒の学位、あるいは大学院の修士号や博士号さえ
不可欠だった。
でも、シンボル分析は、
コンピュータが非常に得意な分野だ。
コンピュータが苦手なのはむしろ、
現実世界のどろどろした部分だ。
それに、シンボルはアスマラやラパスにすぐに送信できて、
そこでボストンのほんの数分の一のコストで分析できちゃう。
だから 21 世紀を下るにつれて、
それまで学卒の学位が必要だった仕事はだんだん削減されて、
残った仕事の多くは、
世界文学を勉強していなくても、
それなりに知的な人物であれば
十分にこなせるものになった。
このトレンドは、1996 年にすら明らかだったはずだ。
だって当時ですら、アメリカでいちばんの金持ちは
ビル・ゲイツだった。
かれは大学のオチこぼれだった。
どうやら世界最強の情報技術企業をつくるのには、
正式な教育なんかあまりいらないらしい。）
実際、そうなのだ。
かれは "a college dropout" だった。
そのかれが 「世界最強の情報技術企業」 をつくり、
そして2007年には、母校であるハーバード大学から
名誉学位号を授与され、事実上、
"Harvard's most successful dropout"
となった。
2008年6月30日をもって、
マイクロソフト社 (Microsoft Corporation) の
会長職にはとどまるものの、
かれはフルタイムの仕事からは引退した。
しかし、フォーブス全米長者番付首位を
独走するかれが、今後とも多方面に対し
隠然たる影響力を発揮しつづけていくことは
まちがいないことであろう。
